Our Story

Who We Are

It all started back in 2018 after Phillip Lakich, a new computer science graduate, became… bored—bored after surveying so many derivative sites in an attempt to find the answer to what makes the ideal (one definition of storybook) website, one that makes buyers choose one (yours) over the others. Coincidentally, it was through that boredom that he believed he found the key.

Because all the sites he surveyed, he realized, had one thing in common: they were all just the bare facts of what and how. Read enough variations of “we’re in this industry offering these services” and they’ll all start to blend together. In essence, they lacked character.

And that’s crucial because characters are the animating spirit of the experiences that we all eagerly seek out in the form of books, films, and TV shows. Our lives are shaped by the characters we meet, by the memories we form with them. Phillip Lakich founded Storybook Websites on the conviction that our websites can, and should, be similarly remarkable.

Storybook Websites is all about injecting that character back into the online experience, creating something that your clients can relate to, respect, and remember, so they can say they bought not just from a company, but from an individual, or for the individual spirit that defines them. Communication is key here. People are easily bored with facts, but enamored with stories.

The Need for Stories

Stories are everywhere! From what you wear, to the subtle gestures you make in conversation, to the way you speak—all of them tell a story, but you need the right insight to read it. That’s the magic of stories. They lend you that insight, uncovering all, while building a fondness for the subject matter. Stories bring us closer; they bring us together.

It works the same for businesses and their customers. The biggest companies all use the art of storytelling to their advantage. When thinking about building a website, one main issue all companies face is this: how do we present the relevant information to the user? Because how you do it is just as important as the information itself.

Amazon, for instance, spends millions a year on researching ways to optimize the way they display information on their site. And it works—they’re the king of online retailers by a wide margin.

It’s not just ecommerce sites that need to make use of these principles. All sites, whether an ecommerce site or not, are essentially selling something. That something is you and your brand. And if the information is not laid out in a way that is interesting to the user, demonstrates your value, and gets them to take action, then you’ve lost a sale. The cost of a poorly structured site is your reputation and future business.

Our Mission

Think of the information on your site like the doorman of a building. Information that doesn’t sell is like having a confused, disheveled doorman coming out to greet your customers. All it serves is to turn people away. Fact is, people judge a book by its cover, and that judgment takes place in less than a second on the internet. So you need one fancy doorman!

Our mission is to fix the web development landscape by making visually stunning websites that tell your full, captivating story (i.e., the who, what, when, where, and why of your company, and the story of how your offerings confer value), the doorman needed to attract and keep them coming back for each new chapter. Storybook Websites is an innovative mixture of cognitive science, effective writing, beautiful art, and the latest web tech to ensure your site is one for the history books.
